History of CSS

The Children’s Support Service (CSS) has a proud history of providing high-quality, inclusive education for young people across the South of Essex and West of Essex. Established to meet the needs of pupils who require additional support beyond a mainstream setting, our provision has grown into a vibrant and nurturing Alternative Provision School where every child is valued, understood, and encouraged to succeed.

In 2011, across Essex, The Local Authorities Behaviour Support and Integrated Support services merged to form one service – The Children’s Support Service (CSS) one in each quadrant of Essex.  Whereas the Children’s Support Services in the other quadrants over the years have become Academy Trusts and therefore changed their names, CSS remains part of the Local Authority.

From its earliest days, the service has been rooted in a clear belief: that all young people deserve a second chance, a fresh start, and the opportunity to thrive. Over the years, we have evolved to meet the changing needs of our community, expanding our curriculum, strengthening partnerships with schools and families, and developing specialist support that addresses both academic progress and emotional wellbeing.

Our dedicated staff team has always been at the heart of this journey. Through their expertise, compassion, and commitment, we have built an environment where pupils can rebuild confidence, re-engage with learning, and develop the skills needed for a successful future.

Today, the Children’s Support Service stands as a forward-thinking provision, proud of its past and ambitious for its future, continuing to transform lives through education, care, and opportunity.
