Referal Process

What is the referral process?

Before making a referral

CSS asks for the requirements below to be met (where appropriate and possible) before a positive referral is applied for:

  • Use of additional in-school support for the pupil over a period of time
  • All appropriate strategies to have been tried and evaluated
  • Involvement or discussion with the CSS Early Intervention Service (please contact Steve Phillips for more information)
  • Evidence of engagement of multi-agency support, including involvement of the CSS Early Intervention Service
  • Consideration of a managed move or an alternative education programme/work-related learning programme where applicable
  • Involvement of SAS and discussion with Educational Psychologist and/or Locality Casework Manager for a pupil with an EHCP or Statement, and agreement of the referral at an Annual Review Meeting

What happens after a referral is made?

Once a referral has been received:

  1. The referral is reviewed by the appropriate team (SEND Operations, Education Access Panel, or Medical Admissions team)
  2. A decision is made about whether CSS is the appropriate provision for the pupil
  3. The school and family are informed of the outcome
  4. If accepted, a transition plan is put in place to support the pupil's admission to CSS

We work closely with families, schools, and external agencies to ensure a smooth transition and the best possible outcomes for each pupil.

What support is available during the transition to CSS?

We understand that moving to a new school can be daunting for both pupils and families. We provide:

  • A named key adult who will oversee the transition process
  • Information gathering from the previous school and family about the pupil's needs, strengths, and any barriers to learning
  • A settling-in session where possible, so the pupil can visit CSS, meet staff and other pupils, and get familiar with the environment
  • A buddy system to help the pupil settle in during their first weeks
  • Clear communication with families about start dates, routines, expectations, and key contacts
  • Regular check-ins with the pupil and family during the first few weeks to ensure they are settling in well

We aim to make every pupil feel safe, valued, and ready to thrive at CSS.
